4 Types of Vasque’s Hiking Boots “Lasts” – Best hiking boots.
Vasque has always been on the leading edge of hiking boot technology. From it’s first shoe, the Voyager back in 1965 through today with it’s best selling Breeze line of hiking boots.
Constantly designing new technologies to keep hikers feet comfy is always a high priority.
What’s a Last?
All hiking boots are built around a plastic mold in the shape of a foot called a “last”. Their is a last for each size of hiking boot manufactured and each hiking boot manufacturer has their own lasts, so this is why some brands of hiking boot will fit better than others. Once you find a brand that seems to fit you perfectly, your best is to stick with that brand.
Vasque currently has four different styles of lasts that they use – each one is designed for specific foot types and activities.
Immerse 360 Last
The Immerse 360 last is the highest performance last that allows the foot to be able to move more naturally. Used in the Vasque Transistor FS Trail Running Shoe for optimum performance by supporting the foot, yet at the same time not restricting the foots movement. This leads to stronger feet which increases performance. It is well suited for high arches as the foot is put in a more powerful position through the use of a slight asymmetrical shape. The foot is anchored with narrow heel pockets that reduce excess foot movement.
Perpetuum Last
For hiking boots made for long distance, weekend or multi-day trips the Perpetuum Last is used. Perfect for hikers with flatter feet since the last has a straighter line. Since flat feet or lower and take up less space within the boot, the Perpetuum has a lower volume heel and tailored instep so your feet do not move too much inside the boot. When hiking long distances feet will swell and expand; so the wider toe box of the Perpetuum last allows for more room so your toes will not rub the inside of your boots.
Used in the Ranger GTX hiking boots, Mantra hiking shoes
, Mindbender trail running shoes
and Blur SL trail running shoes
.
Arc Tempo Last
For shorter distances on rougher, uneven terrain the Arc Tempo last is used for an athletic fit for more agility and quickness. It has a medium volume heel for a wider range of foot shapes. It is good for feet with higher arches because it uses an asymmetrical curve which gives your foot more power during toe off. This power allows for quicker obstacle clearance.
Used in the Juxt light hiking shoes, Opportunist low and mid hiking shoe
, Jule Women’s light hiking shoe
, Taku Waterproof GTX Boot
, Scree Low and Mid hiking shoes
, Breeze GTX hiking boots
and Velocity trail running shoes
The Summit Last
The Summit is a hybrid last that uses a straighter rorepart with the heal of the Arc Tempo. Used in stiffer boots to lessen walking fatigue with it’s rockered toe, strong arch support and positive lock heel pocket.
Used in the Summit GTX hiking boots, Wasatch GTX hiking boot
and Bitterroot GTX hiking boots
.
So from these four types of “lasts”, many different styles of hiking boots, hiking shoes and trail running shoes were built around. Matching up the activity you will be doing up with your foot type provides you with the best performance and the best comfort for your feet.
